Product Description
Sierra Fly-Fishing is an episodic instructional fly-fishing show that features the rich and diverse world of fly-fishing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. We explore these waters with Guy Jeans as our guide. Guy is the owner of Kern River Troutfitters Fly Shop and Kern River Fly Fishing Guide Service located in Kernville, CA. He teaches us the varied techniques for a successful day on the river, tailored to each location and condition. The first show focuses on fly-fishing the lower Kern River. The lower kern is a notoriously challenging tail water flowing from Lake Isabella. This past winter we were able to film some exciting sequences on the lower Kern presenting the techniques Guy uses in finding and catching the beautiful trophy rainbows that elude most anglers on this section of river. The lower Kern River is only a two and a half hour drive from Los Angeles and a three-hour drive from San Diego. Southern Californians don t realize that they have a world-class fly-fishing destination right in their own back yard. The Kern Drainage is home to three of California s wild native heritage trout; the Golden Trout, Kern River Rainbow, and the Little Kern Golden Trout. In future shows we will focus on The Upper Kern and it s many diverse tributaries, as well as the beautiful creeks and meadows of the High Sierras. The Techniques covered are Kern Czech Nymphing Kern Dead Drift Streamer Techniques Down Stream Presentation
Review
June 2007 Review in California Fly Fisher Magazine. (Abbreviated) It pains me to admit this, but most fly-fishing videos leave me unimpressed and uninspired. I can tolerate only so much Here I am again with yet another really big fish before I start yawning uncontrollably and nod off to dream of more pleasant things like root canals or barium enemas. It most cases, the typical fly-fishing DVD amounts to little more than watching someone else catch fish, which isn t as much fun as catching them and is about as interesting to me as watching paint dry. Sierra Fly Fishing, vol. 1: The Lower Kern River, however, isn t like that all. It succeeds handsomely in creating the illusion that you are a part of the action in real time, rather than the after-the-fact witness to it that you really are as a viewer. The experience of fishing is found in other things aside from flowing water and large trout that take you deep into your backing. Clouds billowing over the high ridges, delicate blades of grass swaying in the breeze, and hummingbirds sucking the nectar from the wildflowers that grow along the banks of the river are all a part of the experience of fishing the lower Kern, and I know this is so because I ve been there and done that. When fond memories take me back to that river or when I anticipate returning to it, images such as those add color and vibrancy to the vision. In this DVD, producer/director/cinematographer Tysun McMullan s images are so much like those that I carry with me in my own mind that it almost seems as if he has somehow crawled into my head and lifted them from me, and I am left to assume correctly, I think that he sees this river as I do. In this DVD, McMullan has done something that is easy to conceptualize, but very difficult actually to do, and that is to deliver the essence of what fishing a particular body of water is all about. As I noted, the cinematography credit also goes to McMullan, and exquisite is a fitting adjective with which to describe much of the camera work this DVD contains. If McMullan doesn t love that river deeply and know it thoroughly, he s done a very convincing job in fooling me into believing that he does. He s also done a very good job of making the viewer feel as though he or she is right there on the river. I can t give McMullan all of the credit, though his cinematography and direction certainly play a major role. The host deserves some credit for his part in pulling off this grand illusion, too. The host role for this production is filled by Guy Jeans, a licensed guide and owner of the Kern River Troutfitters fly shop in Kernville. Given Jeans s professional background, one would rightly assume that he has this portion of the Kern River pretty much figured out. Knowing how, though, is only part of the equation in being a good fishing guide. The other part is being able to teach someone else how. In this production, Jeans demonstrates that he is very good at explaining a problem, defining a solution, and explaining why he has elected to solve the problem in the manner that he has. Sierra Fly Fishing, vol. 1: The Lower Kern River, then, is a rare gem among fly-fishing DVDs. From the cinematography done with the sensitivity of a true artist s eye, to Guy Jeans role as the knowledgeable, amicable host and teacher, to the background score that could stand on its own just fine, this production has all the pieces needed to make it something special, and it leaves little to disappoint. My wife s comment upon seeing this DVD really sums it up nicely. Wow! I feel like I ve been there, she said. That s high praise, considering that she s a fly fisher, but hasn t yet fished the lower Kern, nor has she even seen it in the flesh. I can't imagine anyone who is going to fish the Kern not wanting this video. Paul Ryan Director of Photography - A River Runs Through It.........When I started fly-fishing I took a beginners lesson with Guy, and what you see on-screen is genuine. He is a fantastic teacher who wants you to do well and have fun at the same time. His passion for the sport of fly fishing clearly shines through in the video, and it is obvious that the Kern River is a tremendous fishery that Guy knows like the back of his hand. It is a fantastic video. Well done gentlemen! Thanks, Rob Axton..........I loved the DVD. Anyone who has fished the kern, or might be interested in fishing the kern can learn alot from it. I really enjoyed how it was presented in a fashon that people watching the video have a general idea of how to fly fish. I get tired of videos that spend half the time talking about how to cast and what a fly is. It gets right to the point and gives a great informational piece of the lower kern, and different tactics and strategies to fish the water. I learned so much about where to fish, the hydrology of the lower, and why the lower kern is the way it is. By far the best fly fishing DVD in my arsenal, and you can quote me on that. Kreg - Riverside Ca..........I liked the way it showed several different techniques for fishing not only a tailwater like the lower Kern, but any fishery. I can't wait to get out and give them a try. Jon - Papasequoia.............very well done and a "no nonsense" instructional tool... just the right amount of "fluff" with a tremendous quantity of "stuff'' which will be beneficial to any flyfisher! Even my wife gave it 'two thumbs up!'" Dave Westlake CA...........Your video production Sierra Fly-Fishing Volume 1 is truly an outstanding and informative fly fishing video. It is a straight-to-the-point video that clearly communicates the techniques without superfluous information to confuse or get in the way of the key points. Guy Jeans obviously knows what he is doing. He has earned a great deal of respect from the fly-fishing community. In addition, he is truly one of the nicest guys you can ever talk to. It is very rare to find such a combination these days. The video and audio quality is great. Although the video is not in high-definition, the information certainly is. Even the background music is great. I am relatively new to fly-fishing and have been on the water only twice so far. With the concepts and information Guy communicated in this video, I feel well prepared to make better choices and subsequently increase the success rate on future trips. Thank you for providing us with a great informative video that will get a lot of time in the DVD player. I am looking forward to future videos from you. Thank you, Robb Ramos --Website Testimonials
